Italian prog-rockers Goblin contributed eccentric riffage to Dario Argento's brutal and beautiful Deep Red (standout track: Death Dies), but they really hit the motherlode on their second Argento collaboration, Suspiria (1977). If ever a film set out to disprove the argument that the best film music is that which you don't hear, this is it. Built around a melody that drags Tubular Bells into a cackling Mittel-European whirlwind, Suspiria is a demonic assault that only the stone deaf could fail to notice. Film critic Alexander Walker famously referred to Goblin's contribution as the sound of "500 cats having their tails trampled on in unison". The key word there is "unison" – make no mistake, there's method in Goblin's cacophony, if not always in their film choices. Like Morricone, they occasionally gave brilliant work to dumb movies. GOBLIN were formed in the early ‘70s inspired by prog bands like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. In the early 1975 the band was called in to replace the composer Giorgio Gaslini – who had left the film Profondo Rosso (Deep Red) after an argument with director Dario Argento – and rewrote most of the score, including the famous main theme. The success exceeded all expectations: more than one million copies sold, enjoying 52 weeks on the Italian charts and ranking no.1 in both the singles and LP categories. This launched a highly successful period for the band. Between 1975 and 1976 Goblin released the instrumental progressive rock album Roller. In 1977 the band was called once again from Dario Argento for his new film Suspiria, which became a cult movie. In 1978 Goblin recorded another successful soundtrack for the movie Zombie directed by George Romero and a concept album about drugs Il Fantastico Viaggio Del Bagarozzo Mark. During the following years, despite their success, after a series of line-up changes Goblin broke up temporarily, but there were partial reunifications for Argento’s Tenebrae (1982) and Non Ho Sonno (2000).
CLAUDIO SIMONETTI started his solo carrer and began to work as a producer. In the 1978 he wrote songs for and produced the band Easy Going Claudio Simonetti & Dario Argento The successful collaboration with the director Dario Argento continues in 1984 with the soundtrack “Phenomena” (Creepers), in 1985 “Demons” and in 1988 with “Opera”. All these records reached the top in the Italian charts.
After years of live concerts with his group, Claudio Simonetti has recorded in 1991 the album called: “Simonetti Horror Project”. In the first few weeks after its release the album has sold more than 120.000 copies and it is at the top of all the Italian charts In 1999, Simonetti formed the heavy metal band Daemonia, which has recorded updated versions of Goblin favorites in addition to original material. Daemonia has also contributed tracks to U.S. DVD releases of Italian horror movies. He composed the title track “Mater Lacrimarum” for The Mother of Tears soundtrack in 2007, which features background vocals by Dani Filth. In 2009, Claudio collaborated with the Los Angeles heavy metal band Rusty Eye. He played keyboard on “Mondo Cane” and “Wings of the Demon” from the album Possessor. In 2013, he also played keyboard on the “Aggregat 4″ track from the Simulakrum Lab album, a vintage synhesizers music project created by Paolo Prevosto
